What is Defensive Driving ? The standard Safe Practices for Motor Vehicle Operations, ANSI/ASSE Z15.1, defines defensive driving as "driving to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others."[1] This definition is taken from the National Safety Council's Defensive Driving Course. It is a form of training for motor vehicle drivers that goes beyond mastery of the rules of the road and the basic mechanics of driving. Its aim is to reduce the risk of collision by anticipating dangerous situations, despite adverse conditions or the mistakes of others. This can be achieved through adherence to a variety of general rules, as well as the practice of specific driving techniques. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Unique Features 1. How many of us and someone we know (friends or family) who have been involved in some kind of road accidents (crash) ? How many tragic lost of families on the roads have you read in our daily news over the last 10 years ? Now, how many of you start to think those above won't happen to me because I am a good driver and have intention to be safe ? Or its just a fated, nothing we can do about it ? Everyday as we are on the road on our way to work, on our way to our favorite malls, to our home, these are the hazards (dangers) we face that can cause us to have incidents that might lead to loss of lives of us and our loved ones: 1. Other road users who are aggressive i.e. fast, trail your back, cut in your lane suddenly. 2. Other road users who are distracted and not aware of you i.e. by handphone 3. Unsafe road conditions i.e. potholes, wet roads with water puddle, sharp corners. 4. Sharing road with other vehicle sizes i.e. motorcycle in between rows of cars, trucks right behind your vehicle. 5. Our own unsafe driving i.e. sms, feeling sleepy, unaware, driving with risks. I believe all of you know how to drive and can drive, and not ever have any accident in the past. Is that skill or luck ? Driving defensively requires a new set of driving techniques, which ensures better awareness of surrounding dangers/hazards and consciously driving with low risk approach. Want to be safer on road ?
